Identifier mapping is translating between different ways of naming the same biological entity.
Common situations:
- Data uses stable IDs (e.g., Ensembl gene IDs)
- Downstream tools want gene symbols (e.g., HGNC)
- Some assays use non-gene identifiers (probes, peptides, genomic coordinates)
